Danke is an 8 year old pure bred Doberman who was surrendered to the Cayman Islands Humane Society after she was found in a 12x12 chain link concrete kennel with her father. He was dead, and had been for three days according to the "owners" of these dogs. The owner stated that the dogs were fine when they had been checked on three days prior but 3 days later, they found him dead and already decompoosing. Their reason for surrendering her was they could no longer financially care for her. The people that owned these dogs were attempting to tie the dog to the front door of the building when she noticed there were3 staff members, myself included, watching her through the front door. We asked her to come inside and fill out some papers. It wasn't until after they left that we found out the horrors that this sweet dog had to endure for her entire life. She lived pretty much her whole life in the concrete kennel. She was bred to her father several times producing puppies(and thousands of dollars for these folks) each time. She never knew the beauty of hugs, air conditioning, fresh food and water etc. At some point in her life her right front leg had been broken and never repaired properly. She is a little stiff on it but glucosamine has helped already...
I have had her as a foster dog for only just a week. I have taken her to the vet for a check up and labwork which has all come back normal. She is however, positive for heartworms(as so many dogs here are). She is also emaciated. I'd give her a BCS of 2/10. She weighs only 62 pounds but should weigh between 75-85 pounds. She has pressure sores on all her bony prominences and flea allergy dermatitis around her rear. Since I have had her she has learned the beauty of eating three times daily, sleeping on the couch, air conditioning, and the company of another dog whom she loves. Danke has gained almost 6 pounds since her vet visit a week ago, she is surprisingly housebroken, and doesn't mind sleeping in a large crate at night and when I am not home. She is being walked short distances to help her gain muscle in her legs. She wears doggie shoes sometimes on her back legs since she sometimes drags her feet, and she splays out on the tile floor since she has no real muscle to help her from doing so. She has been doing this a lot less lately. She is the sweetest dog and deserves a home where she can live out her remaining years in peace. She is great with other dogs, and loves children. I walked her today with my 100 pound Boxer mix and a 20 lb Bichon and she was great with everyone. She can be transported off island once she is spayed(hopefully next week) and has put on some much needed weight. Cayman Air flies non-stop to several places in FL and NYC, and Delta will also transport animals from here(they're just more expensive). If you think you can help, I would appreciate it!
